Cracked Wheat Upma


  • Fine Cracked Wheat  2 servings
  • Salt  as per taste
  • Black mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
  • Channa dhal – 1 tbsp
  • Split urad dhal – 1 tbsp
  • Dried red chillies / Red pepper flakes
  • Mint leaves – 4 or so leaves
  • Asafetida – a pinch
  • Whole dried red chillies / or Red pepper flakes – as per taste
  • Water – 4 servings (use the same measure that you  used for the cracked wheat and double it)
  • Oil for seasoning

Putting it together

  • In a Non stick Pan (If you want crispy crusts), or Pot, put down some oil
  • Add mustard seeds, once it sputters, add the dhal and chillies in to the oil
  • Once the dhal turns brown, pour the water in to the pan
  • Now add salt, asafetida, finely chopped mint leaves and bring it to a boil
  • Then add the cracked wheat to the water and stir occasionally till the water gets dried up
  • If you are using a pan, leave it untouched for 5 min, till you get a crispy golden crust
  • Remove from fire and serve with Tomato Sambhar or chutney or your choice
  • You could choose to serve the crust, or enjoy it all alone (cook’s special appetizer)
